The greatest outrage today must be Trump’s pardoning of former president Orlando Hernández of Honduras. As detailed in Narcostates Hernández was convicted by the US government of profiting from the drug trade. Specifically he and his brother took bribes from El Chapo and the Sinaloa cartel.
Trump’s pardoning of Hernández lays bare Trumps hypocrisy and the true purpose of the actions he has undertaken against Venezuela. Trump policy seeks a coup d’état and has little do with not narcotics trafficking.
As stated in a previous article on this website Maduro is not anywhere near the level of Hernandez. Within Maduro’s regime, there are elements that are part of the government and military who are involved in the drug trade. They do so not only to enrich themselves, but also to control the underground economy. While I am no supporter of of Maduro’s domestic policies as a populist authoritarian Marxist, to say that Venezuela is a narcostate is entirely false. There is no evidence Maduro or his government is directly profiting from the drug trade.
There is nothing to be gained by making war on Venezuela, especially because it would be a war based on false pretenses and anyone who knows anything knows it. Whoever is advising Trump is giving him bad advice. Trump should be ashamed for what he has done since becoming president. He is committing extrajudicial murder in international waters. Not a single American or Venezuelan should dying trying to overthrow the Venezuelan government. If they do, Trump should be held accountable for his lies and hypocrisy. What is democracy if it is imposed by the barrel of a gun?
