Trump, Mexico’s Sheinbaum Spar Over Drug Cartels

Trump is pressuring Mexico to allow the US Military to enter Mexico and is threatening to use the drones to unilaterally strike cartels in Mexico. See WSJ May 3, 2025: https://archive.ph/SZHct.

This is a bad idea.

If you think Canadian nationalism was extreme when Trump threatened to make Canada the 51st state, wait until the US takes unilateral action against Mexico. Mexican nationalism will be 100 times as extreme as that found in Canada.

It is a dangerous precedent. in conjunction with Trump’s punitive tariffs, Mexico will see any unilateral military action as an aggressive act and it will likely lead to a breakdown in US-Mexico relations.

Any US military action without Mexican approval will endanger US citizens in Mexico. If there is collateral civilian damage, the reaction from Mexico will be extreme.

Trump’s solution of using military force in Mexico is poorly thought out. I have expressed thoughts on why using the Special Forces in Mexico is a bad idea. See my article on the analysis webpage. See: https://williamlmarcy.com/2024/12/15/thoughts-on-the-use-of-the-us-special-forces-to-eliminate-mexicos-cartels/ . In the conclusions of Narcostates, I outlined what the US and Mexico should together. Strengthening the border, precursor chemical control, and going after cartel assets (this required the terrorist designation) in conjunction with measures to reduce their political imprint is the best way to weaken them. In addition to contraband, the passage of people through Mexico (from the rest of the world) towards the US border and the smuggling of US-made weapons into Mexico must also be addressed.

However, if you are like most Americans and lack the concentration to read anything substantial beyond the usual tripe, the farcical movies titled Infierno and La Dictadura Perfecta depict the problems of Mexico’s drug war well.
